CFK Tugas compete twice, gearing up for nationals
The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) swim teams are winding down their season and gearing up for nationals with strong performances at back-to-back meets, the Stanton C. Craigie Memorial Invitational and the 2025 Midwest Cup Virtual Meet.
At the Stanton C. Craigie Memorial Invitational, held February 7-9 in Ft. Pierce, FL, the Tugas achieved numerous personal bests and national qualifications. Teagan Lavin and Victoria Mayor from the women's team set personal records in multiple events, while Kaemon Fagley led the men's team with seven personal bests and a new school record in the 50-yard backstroke.
Five CFK swimmers qualified for nationals in 23 events at this meet. Lavin secured a spot in the 50-yard breaststroke, while Fagley, Eddie Kertis, Drew Lebsack, and Lucas Montiel de la Nuez qualified in various events. The men's relay teams also broke two school records, with the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay setting new benchmarks.
Following this success, the Tugas participated in the 2025 Midwest Cup Virtual Meet on February 10, competing against Southwest Oregon and Barton Community College from the CFK pool. Mayor continued her strong performance with personal bests in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, while Montiel de la Nuez improved his 50-yard breaststroke time.
The virtual meet saw additional national qualifications, with Isabella Oliverio securing a spot in the 200-yard IM. The men's team added to their impressive tally, with Fagley, Kertis, Lebsack, and Montiel de la Nuez qualifying in various individual events and relays.
CFK Athletic Director and Coach Lori Bosco expressed pride in the team's accomplishments: "Our swimmers continue to surpass expectations. Their dedication is evident in the personal bests, broken records, and national qualifications we've seen in these recent meets."
The Tugas are now setting their sights on the upcoming NJCAA National Swimming and Diving Championship in Buffalo, NY, March 5-8. The athletes are focusing their practices on the races in which they will compete. With another time trial on February 14, they have one more opportunity to lower their qualifying times and make the cut for new events on the national stage.
